Tapentadol is a prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe pain. Your doctor may decide to use it to treat additional conditions.

Tapentadol comes as a tablet and oral solution (liquid) to take by mouth. The US FDA approved Tapentadol in November 2008, the Australian TGA in December 2010, and the UK’s MHRA in February 2011. Tapentadol immediate-release (IR) preparations (50, 75, and 100 mg) for moderate to severe acute pain and extended-release (ER) preparations (50, 100, 150, and 200 mg) for severe acute pain were both approved in India by the Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in April 2011 and December 2013, respectively.

Tapentadol is used to treat acute (after an injury, surgery, etc.) and chronic musculoskeletal pain that ranges in intensity from mild to severe. Additionally, it is specifically advised for managing diabetic neuropathy pain when 24-hour opioid treatment is necessary. Tapentadol formulations with an extended release are not recommended for the treatment of acute pain. 

The pregnancy category for Tapentadol is C. Tapentadol has not been adequately and carefully studied in pregnant women, and it is not advised that they use it during or just before labor and delivery. 

The use of tapentadol in children has not been adequately and carefully studied.

What specific safety measures should I take? 

 Prior to ingesting tapentadol,

• If you have any allergies, including to tapentadol, other drugs, or any of the substances in tapentadol tablets or extended-release tablets, notify your doctor right away.
• If you have paralytic ileus or any of the other conditions indicated, let your doctor know very once (condition in which digested food does not move through the intestines). You could be advised by your doctor not to take tapentadol.
• If you have or have ever had a blockage in your stomach or intestines, a medical condition that makes it difficult for you to urinate, or an illness of the pancreas, gallbladder, kidney, thyroid, or liver, let your doctor know.
• This medication may reduce both male and female fertility, so you should be aware of that. The dangers of using tapentadol should be discussed with your doctor.
• Inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking tapentadol if you are having surgery, including dental surgery.
• Take recommended diet
• Unless your doctor directs you otherwise, continue eating normally.

What negative effects might this medicine have?

Any of these symptoms that are severe or persistent should be immediately reported to your doctor:
